2024 Flu Strains

Influenza (Flu) viruses are constantly evolving and changing. The annual vaccine strains need to change to best match the currently circulating virus strains.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends strains for our Southern Hemisphere vaccine annually, based on international surveillance of circulating viruses. Australasian experts then review our local data and epidemiology and agree on which four strains will be in the upcoming vaccine.

The vaccines we use are made at the Seqirus Laboratory in Melbourne, Australia. They are kept at between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius from the time of manufacture until they are administered into your arm, including throughout transportation and storage.

Two of the four strains in the 2024 vaccine are new.

The Seqirus strains that will be used to match the WHO strains are as follows:

• A/Victoria/4897/2022 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus
• A/Thailand/8/2022 (H3N2)-like virus
• B Victoria B/Austria/1359417/2021 BVR-26-like virus
• B Yamagata B/Phuket/3073/2013 BVR-1B-like virus
